I was looking for a quilt for my new bed and it turns out my mom had the perfect quilt. Although it could have been her great grandmother thus my great great grandmother. The backing was put on by the next generation as it was not quite finished. In photo #3 you can see how it is attached with pieces of yarn. A proper quilt needs to have that yarn which can be seen better in photo 4 along with Crackers. She had been helping me put it on the bed.
The quilts I saw at the antique stores were quilted rather than quilts. A proper quilt is bits of fabric sewn together. Fake quilts are a single sheet of fabric sewn to make the fluffy bits. Thank you for looking and all that.

These are usually called crazy quilts because of irregular patterns or various cut patches of material (not yarn). Great quilt you have there.

My elderly aunt was making quilts before she died in her late eighties. She bought quilt squares and even sold completed quilts. I talked about them with her before she died in 1986 and learned a lot about them. I remember going to a small exibit in the 1980`s in an actual department store and there was a crazy quilt given in a raffle (a way of raising money by selling numbered tickets). The raffle was happening in 20 minutes so we stayed and I actually won the raffle !! A familiar looking lady rushed over to me offering me $35.00 for the quilt. She really wanted it bad. Later that day I remembered that she used to be my landlady in the fall of 1974.

"Good night my sweet prince" as Horatio said to Hamlet. At least according to Shakespeare.

How great to have something hand made from your family that can be used again after all these years.

Your GGGrandmother did a nice job with the quilt top. When the backing is attached by tying it at interals with yarn, I believe that it is referred to as a "tied" quilt.
