The handbag as we know it today emerged in the Victorian era, when it became fashionable for ladies to own different bags (called 'reticules') to match their outfits. Bags got more complicated in the early 1900's, with the addition of fasteners, locks, and internal pockets. By the 1920's, most women were carrying purses, but didn't own one to match each dress. Though purses became utilitarian in the 1940's, by the 1960's designers like Dior and Chanel had made purses as central to a wardrobe as a dress or shoes.
