Toy trains have been associated with Christmas ever since Joshua Lionel Cowen convinced department store owners to incorporate his trains into their Christmas window displays in the 1920s. Model trains quickly became popular holiday gifts, and Lionel’s oversized, painted trains were the market leader, followed by American Flyer. Although Lionel continued to produce trains after WW2, its prewar sets are the most sought after by collectors.
Christmas antiques and collectibles abound, ranging from hand-crafted folk items to modern limited-edition works. Whether thematic (Santa, nutcrackers, reindeer, elves) or functional (trees, ornaments, lights, bells, records), they usually evoke the warmth and cheer of holidays celebrated the old-fashioned way.
