From the Victorian era through the mid 20th century, people used iron Christmas tree stands, or simply nailed a piece of wood into the tree’s base and covered it with a red skirt. But in the late 1950s, thanks to the advent of lighter materials like aluminum and steel, along came a new breed: the rotating stand. Made especially for space-age aluminum trees, these electric stands were often paired with small light wheels that projected colors onto the tree.
Christmas antiques and collectibles abound, ranging from hand-crafted folk items to modern limited-edition works. Whether thematic (Santa, nutcrackers, reindeer, elves) or functional (trees, ornaments, lights, bells, records), they usually evoke the warmth and cheer of holidays celebrated the old-fashioned way.
