Grandfather (aka long-case or floor) clocks are known for their swinging pendulums and hourly chimes. First produced by English clockmaker William Clement in 1670, they usually stand 6-8 feet high, and have tall, narrow cases and wide faces. They typically use a weight-driven mechanism: the clock is wound by pulling on chains that hang near the pendulum, giving weights on the other end room to slowly drop, powering the clock and the chime.
People have been collecting clocks for centuries, and there’s a lot to learn. From famous makers like Ansonia, New Haven, Ingraham, Waterbury and Sessions to functional categories like wall, grandfather (long case), mantel, regulator, cuckoo and alarm, there’s a wide variety of clocks to choose from and learn about.
