After their success with Spider-Man, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko struck again with an idea for a new team of heroes: 'The X-Men,' first published in 1963. Originally consisting of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, and Angel, the cast has grown larger in the ensuing years. X-Men comics were printed until the mid-70's, when reprints began to appear. In 1975, the series was re-launched and new issues have been in production ever since.
Comics have been published for over a century, and collectors tend to categorize them into five ‘Ages’: Platinum (1897-1937), Golden (1938-55), Silver (1956-69), Bronze (1970-79) and Modern (1980-present). Comics continued to evolve throughout, but some fundamentals remain the same: rarity, title/issue, and condition (there’s a specific grading scale) determine value. Popular titles include Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men, Batman, Green Lantern, and Incredible Hulk.
