Japanese Ningyo (human figure dolls) have served as playthings, religious icons, good luck charms, and ornaments for centuries. Well-known styles include Daruma, or rounded red dolls with expressive faces; Hina, or beautifully decorated figures in tiny kimonos and makeup; and simple wooden Kokeshi dolls, often used as tokens or souvenirs in resorts.
People have been making and collecting dolls since the beginning of time. There are many varieties of antique and collectible dolls, ranging from early German, French, bisque, and cloth dolls, to early 20th century Kewpie, Shirley Temple, and Ideal dolls, to later 20th century dolls like Ginny, and of course, Barbie.
