Early fire extinguishers (late 1800s) were little more than chemical-filled glass balls or ‘grenades’ which could be thrown at a fire. If they survived to the present they can be quite beautiful and valuable. In the 1900s, they were replaced by pump-type brass and copper extinguishers produced in large quantities (e.g. ‘Elkhart’), of which far more have survived.
From the earliest days of horse-drawn equipment, firefighters have needed lots of gear and hardware, much of which is now highly collectible. From fire trucks themselves to helmets, extinguishers (and the older-style grenades), badges, ephemera, and even model trucks, there’s a lot to get excited about in this category.
