The Tiffany-style lamp, an American symbol of functionality as well as beauty, was pioneered by Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of the founder of the Tiffany and Co. jewelry firm. In collaboration with Thomas Edison, he made the first Tiffany Studios lamps in the mid 1890s. The typical Tiffany lamp had a bronze base with a thinner neck leading into a shade made of stained glass pieces, originally held together by copper foil. Tiffany's intent was to elevate interior design to the level of fine art for American homes.
There are a wide variety of collectible lamps, from big names like Tiffany and Handel to styles like slag glass, aladdin and Victorian. Values vary greatly, and reproductions abound, so be careful and do your homework.
