Mattel launched the Hot Wheels line in 1968 with 16 cars, followed by 40 models in 1969. Due to poor sales in 1972, only three models were released in 1973 (making them highly collectible). Collectors also prize Hot Wheels variations, such as cars with irregular features like extra spokes on the hubcaps or odd colors. Newer cars can be just as collectible as older ones, as Mattel has released many limited editions.
From the earliest tin, pressed steel and pedal car models to the latest NASCAR limited editions, collectors have always had a thing for model cars. Hot Wheels and Matchbox are collecting worlds unto themselves, and related categories like model trucks, tractors and buses get plenty of interest too. Start your engines!
