Founded in 1846 in Providence, Rhode Island, the A.T. Cross Company originally manufactured fine gold and silver pencil casings and coverings. Cross, a skilled pencil maker, invented the propel-repel mechanical pencil, the basis for today's mechanical pencils. He also pioneered the stylographic pencil, the forerunner to ballpoint pens. The company began making fountain pens in 1938, including many in the Art Deco style.
In the mid-1880s, several craftsmen made improvements which resulted in the first reliable fountain pens, and companies began producing highly elaborate models, some of which are now collectible. Get to know this category before buying - there are many modern, limited editions sold for high prices today, but they’re not vintage. Key early names include Montblanc, Parker, and Waterman.
