After centuries of writing with quills, people began embracing fountain pens with internal ink reservoirs in the 1800s. But not until Lewis Waterman solved the problem of leaks and uneven ink distribution with his 1884 invention of a nib with an air hole did the fountian pen take off. Thereafter, manufacturers battled to create more efficient filling systems, like lever fillers, rubber reservoirs, and disposable cartridges.
In the mid-1880s, several craftsmen made improvements which resulted in the first reliable fountain pens, and companies began producing highly elaborate models, some of which are now collectible. Get to know this category before buying - there are many modern, limited editions sold for high prices today, but they’re not vintage. Key early names include Montblanc, Parker, and Waterman.
