[Courtesy Railroadiana Online]: In the early 20th Century, railroads issued annual calendars as a promotional item, illustrated with specially commissioned art. By the early 1960s as passenger traffic dwindled, most railroads dropped the annual calendar. Those early calendars that have survived are eagerly sought by collectors, with special emphasis placed on completeness (full calendar pads) and good condition.
The railroads built America: up through WWII they were the dominant form of transport, with hundreds of major ‘roads’ hauling passengers and freight. The legacy of those days lives on as railroadiana: from paper (like calendars, postcards, photos and passes), to dining car collectibles like china and silver, to hardware like locks and badges and lanterns.
