Because pins were costly in earlier times, small boxes were typically used to store them. Pin cushions emerged in 15th century England, and by the 1800's were sold as common trinkets or gifts to commemorate events. They became novelty decorations in Victorian households, crafted in various shapes and ornamented with embroidery.
