Charles and Ray Eames, a married couple who pioneered modern furniture and industrial design in the 1950s, were responsible for some of the most innovative and popular designs of the 20th century, fabricated from wood, fiberglass, plastic and even wire mesh. Their designs have been widely imitated, but original Eames chairs are highly sought by collectors.
The Eameses began working together in the 1940's, creating furniture that was simple and modern, yet elegant. Their designs had few bells and whistles, and used affordable and functional materials like aluminum, steel, laminates and experimental plastics. They produced chairs, tables, lamps, and couches, and even designed a number of popular toys.
The couple's sparse yet functional stylings influenced architects, artists, and countless other designers of the era now known as 'mid-century modern.' Although Eames products were popular at the time they were produced, no one really collected them until the mid-1970's.
