Pedal cars, first developed in the 1890s, reached the height of their popularity in the 1920s and 30s, and saw a resurgence in the 1950s with chain-driven models and new designs like airplanes and spaceships. Early pedal cars often featured working accessories (lights, horns, windshields and ragtops), plus chrome trim and white wall tires, hood ornaments and custom paint jobs.
