Animated cartoons first became popular in the 1930s, and have spawned a whole wave of collectibles. The cel (short for celluloid), a colorful transparent sheet on which cartoons were hand-drawn or painted for individual frames, today can be highly collectible. The cels that were actually used in production are the most sought-after, as opposed to special 'limited edition souvenirs' issued after the fact.
