About Vintage Vinyl Records

Records replaced phonograph cylinders around 1900, and had a great 80-year run until compact discs took over the market in the 1980s. Lately, however, vinyl records have been making a comeback. People young and old have been digging out their turntables (or buying new ones) to get that real analog experience.

There are many categories of vintage vinyl collectible records, starting with the three major physical formats. Early 78rpm records were actually made of rubber, while 45 rpm singles and 33 rpm long play record albums (LPs) were made of vinyl, in both stereo and mono (monaural) formats.

Collectors also focus on vinyl LP and 45 rpm records from specific artists (The Beatles, Elvis, Rolling Stones), genres (early jazz, 'psych' rock, Northern Soul), and labels (Blue Note, Sun). In addition, there are collectors who collect foreign releases (e.g. Japanese), promo and private pressings, rare variations, and records with specific types of cover or label art.
