I love this huge Cherry Bakelite necklace. I was SUPER excited when I got it and there was no question in my mind that it was to be one of my favorites. Sadly due to it's age the string broke and now it has to be restrung, which to me is really a major a bummer. I almost rather keep it as is than restring it.

Your thoughts?

Why not restring it yourself? It isn't hard at all

All bakelite necklaces were originally strung on cotton wire. After 70 or + years all cotton wire just crumbled away. So every bakelite necklace that is around has been restrung at some point. If not it falls apart the moment you touch it. I have had that happen to me several times.
No big deal, the value stays the same if you restring.

Yes - buy a good beading thread at a bead store. I wouldn't use vintage thread - obvious that it could be dry and disintegrate easily. Is it 16" or 18" or longer? I could do this for you.

Val... You are so sweet to offer to fix it. I think I will be able to do it. I have done a little jewelry work too. :)

Yeah NEVER get those strings wet when you're cleaning an old necklace, they just immediately deteriorate

Stillwater... Thanks, you told me that with the old ivory necklace too. Unfortunately this one was already deteriorated before your last post!!

You can buy these kits at beading stores for restringing necklaces if you want. No use keeping it in beads! You can't wear it then!

I think these fabulous old pieces are just meant to be worn, not hidden away in a drawer! If you restring it well, it might have another 80 years glamorous life before another lucky owner will have to do it again. It should be out to be admired!

Restring and go out and show them off. There are so many things that I want in this black cherry color...shoes tops the list. Gorgeous!
