Found this snuff jar and I just had to have it. Being an 18 year old collector whos in college limits my buying opportunity, but I decided to push it with this one. Glad I did. This is an original Demuths Snuff jar from Demuths tobacco shop of Lancaster, PA. Up until recently, the shop was/is the oldest tobacco shop in the country. The same day I bought the jar, an article was published on the front page of The Intelligencer Journel/Lancaster New Era about the recent decision to temporary close the shop, with an unknown future. The crock is complete with lid and is great shape. No chips or cracks, and has the label stamped in black, not the typical cobalt blue lettering. I would really love to know when Demuths produced this jar. I have seen several different variations of their snuff jars but never really found out which years certain ones were produced. I am also wondering if the black stamp truely is more rare then the cobalt blue. I have only been told this by an antiques broker who does not specialize in anything. I am always collecting Lancaster County, PA related antiques, especially Rohrer Milk Bottles (Med-O Farms, Jacob Rohrer, Etc.) and Rohrer Whiskey (Lancaster, PA) items. If anyone would like to add what they think the value of this might be for insurance reasons, I welcome it. Thanks.
