Inspired by AmberRose's photos i thought I'd include some.
These were my Grandfathers, who was an engineer aboard this airship, the R100, which didn't catch fire. I think it was decommissioned after the R101 disaster. My Father is slowly scanning lots of photos.
I love the people casually sitting (and standing!) on it so high up!
Reminds me a bit of that well known old photo of workmen eating sandwiches sitting on a girder on top a skyscraper.
My father recently told me a story his father told him, which I'd not heard before, about how Grandad almost died. After working on an engine he slipped but managed to grab hold of one rope with one arm! Apparently we were very nearly never here!
Its hard to believe today, that people worked so high without safety harnesses.
