I put these mementoes in a frame so I could display them and see them all the time. These were my grandfathers, he was a Colonel in the Marine Corps. I think he was a stunningly handsome soldier. Sure do miss him dearly. I made my dad one like this, but his is bigger. I put a Navigational Master pocket watch in the collage I made for him. The bullet casing in the frame is from the 21 gun salute at his funeral. Thank you for looking, I love sharing his things and his memory with others.

Tikiray, Looking at your grandfathers military ribbons, he must have been what the Marines Corps calls a "Mustang" officer. He worked his way up to a officer from the enlisted man ranks. The good conduct medal is issued to enlisted Marines only. I see he has the ribbons for the Korean War and a Navy Presidential unit citation (twice), National Defense, and a WW2 American Campaign ribbon. you should be proud of his service.

WOW, thanks Tom!! I have no idea what the medals or ribbons mean. My dad and my aunt have all of his medals and ribbons. I found these in an old jewelry box that he kept his extra things in. Thanks!!

AR8Jason, Looks like a Marine Corps dress uniform button?
    7. tikiray tikiray, 13 years ago
That is one of his dress buttons, I believe.

Thank you immensely for the information! And now that you mentioned it earlier, I do remember him talking about being a "mustang". He did indeed work, and work hard, at making his way up the ranks. He was devastated by an injury in Korea that left him with only one kidney, he was no longer able to continue his goal to be a General, which was his next step. He retired at age 45 and went to college. I'm incredibly proud of him. Thank you so much for the info AR, I'm going to print it out and put it with the pictures so that when my daughter inherits all this, she will know what it all is.

And that little tiny zippo lighter still works. Wonder if it was given to him by the USMC or if he picked it up somewhere.

I will definitely do that! I would love to have those records for our family to keep and pass down. These are definitely not all of his awards and medals.... my dad and my aunt have pretty much all of them. There were several sets of his ribbons, I kept some and sent some to my brother and sister.

Next time I go to my dads I'll take a picture of my grandfathers medal plaque, it has his sword on it too. You've been very helpful and informative, thank you again!
