I purchased this at auction & my husband thinks I paid more than it is worth but I love this piece. I have heard it called a "buffet" & "server" but have not seen anything like it to actually know. He thinks the cost was too high because the glass had been removed & replaced with Plexiglas. I want to show him it was well worth the cost & also want to replace the glass. Is it possible to have the curved glass cut to replace the piece in the door? I know I can get the flat pieces for the sides. All help will be VERY appreciated. I paid $800 for the piece. Was I "taken" as he tells me?

It doesn't matter what you paid, do you love it, then thats all that matters! Nice piece.

It's been professionally refinished, when I did refinish work I would have charged $500 to refinish a piece this size. A contemporary piece of this quality and construction would cost thousands today, you did good.
Curved china cabinet glass is available, not sure anymore where, but their are sources out their.

If you do go through the trouble to replace the glass, might I suggest a mirror back in the cabinet, it will a little bit of elegance to it.

YardSaleDave, A mirror back sounds wonderful to add. The mirror above the open shelf is very cloudy with silver missing, since the piece has probably been refinished don't you think I should have that mirror replaced also? Thanks for the comments.

My opinion.... I would rather see a cloudy old mirror than a brand new one, even if the piece has been refinished. And I also wouldn't add another mirror.... the wood is beautiful, why cover it up? But, thats just me! I think you did fine for $800, and like official said.... if you love it, it doesn't matter what you paid for it! Enjoy it, it's beautiful!!!

It is English, prolly 1940's, solid Oak, a sever or side board would be correct, China would be stored in the tall curved glass section, linens in the big drawer, silver in the small drawers. The bottom are on the right may or may not have been origianlly glass, might have been wood panel (they came both ways). I too would leave the mirror alone....it's beveled glass, you can't replace that. As for mirror behind the tall sections, I've seen both ways, as long as you don't cement it in place you could change any time you wanted. i Have also seen battery powered LED lights in the top of the tall area , it's all personal preference. It's a great piece, you love it, do what pleases you and ignore the rest.....try to 'pick' the brains of local antique dealers to find out where to get curved glass or try glass installers.... GOOD LUCK and ENJOY.

Very nice piece. You did good pricewise. Curved glass can be bought, and don't replace the mirrors, just get them resilvered. That way it stays mostly original except for the glass.
