My brother gifted this 1847 set to me about 15 years ago. It's been terribly neglected because I didn't know what to do with it. I was afraid of harming it with our modern day chemicals, so it sat tarnished all those years.
Armed with advise from my peers, I finally got up enough nerve to polish this lovely collection.
    I used...
1/2 cup 30 volume salon peroxide
2 1/2 cups arm & hammer baking soda
mixed it into a paste and rubbed onto the flatware.
This amount cleaned an assortment of 58 pieces.

Any form of cleaning involves taking off minute amounts of silver ..... Either on silver plate or sterling. I would buy a silver cloth. It is a good way of maintaining silver. Here's what I use.

Keep the set out of the open air to avoid oxidation. But use it.
