I have been given one as a gift and was told that it was Indian and hand carved from camel bone. And as cows are sacred over there I suspect that that is probably right.

I have one just like this I bought in TN 15 years ago. The card In my box says " the Desert State-Western India people, after the camel dies, use its bones and skin to make artifacts. The bone is treated, polished and burnt to give it this fine texture and to make this beautiful hand-crafted box."
