This Lane coffee table was given to me by a friend a few years ago. It has a serial number on the bottom of 258122. Can anyone tell me where/how to find the age and history of this piece? I'm very curious, but can't seem to find anything helpful. Thanks in advance for any direction.

Lane builds in production dates to their serial numbers...read it backwards.

Amber, I thought that too, but this number doesn't make sense backwards. If it was February, wouldn't it be 02 instead of 22?

Please post a picture of the Lane stamp and serial number.
    4. fhrjr2 fhrjr2, 10 years ago
The reason I am asking you to show the Lane stamp is because they did authorize reproductions and the stamping will be different.

      fhrjr2 - Thanks. I've added the stamp.

I think you already know what I am going to say. Lane devised their serial number system to protect their line of furniture from being reproduced. The reproductions they authorized would have had a tag to the right of the Lane stamp along with a proper serial number and style. You have one of many, many unauthorized reproductions. The coloring of the Lane stamp and font type isn't even close to being right.

Guessing Feb 21st 1985. They say the extra digit indicates factory location. Again, my guess!

You could send them the image of the stamp and perhaps it is an odd ball. They will answer you but it may take a few months.

Thanks for the info ladies. This helps.

I sent the images to a friend who deals in furniture and asked his opinion. icollectglass has the date right, the extra 2 designates the factory location where it was produced. The only thing my friend questioned was the lack of a style designation. The coloration in his opinion could be simply a matter of age.

According to Lane's web site AmberRose is correct. Feb 21 1985 Plant #2.
I would say the table looks more like 1985 than 1952 as well.

"Some chests may also have an extra digit which denotes the plant location.
For example: serial number 2557121 would have been produced on 12/17/55 in plant #2."

Is there any reference materials with more specific information on Lane furniture? Pictures or name of piece? I have a piece from early 70s I am trying to research.

Just research the number code stamped on it. That code will bring you back the information you need if it is an actual piece.
