This is my first post here, I hope you enjoy this great artifact. Sorry the pics aren't the greatest, but I think you should get the idea.

This is possibly my favorite document signed by an important Civil War General Emory Upton. Upton was a brilliant tactician and reconstruction Army reformer. Sadly, not many people know of him today. He was the first General in the American Civil War to assault a fortified position using a vertical line of troops and focusing pressure on a single point in the enemies lines, rather than using horizontal lines of battle.

This letter is full of amazing history, It was written by Upton while serving as the Commandant of Cadets, from America's premiere military academy, West Point. It is written to another Civil War General Thomas Ruger, who would soon be taking the role of Superintendent of West Point. Both would serve in their positions for 5 years and their service inter-lapped for 4 of those years.

Incredibly in the content it mentions General Thayer the "Father of West Point" (Located at bottom of page 4th line from the bottom). Thayer would only live a little over 1 year after this letter was written.
