ESSO is the pronounced abbreviation for Standard Oil, "S", "O".
A Canadian affiliate of ESSO (later to become EXXON then ExxonMobil) is Imperial Oil.
I have seen Canadian versions of your signs "Imperial" above and "Dealer" below ESSO. There are US versions with "Standard" above and "Dealer" below.
The signs you have are in great condition! Are they single-sided or double-sided? If single my guess is that they were previously mounted back to back and held in place inside a metal oval with hangers to hang from a horizontal pole at a station. Double-siders could be mounted alone in a sign ring.
Please tell their history to end up with you. Thanks!!

      Thanks gargoylecollector!
I find the history of an piece is ALMOST as much fun as the piece itself. And....... the history of a specific piece and how it was discovered and collected by one of us is priceless!

I think you can mark it Mystery Solved. As Dave Sierra said they went in an oval mounting.
