Another find from the Alameda Fleamarket. This is a very beautifully-made terracotta treefrog which has been outside for a long time - hence the finish has worn off on top. but the underside is really great! the frog is 7 inches long by 4.5" wide. i imagine that this was made for the tourist trade, but was probably a copy of a dug up artifact. any ideas?

i got some interesting news about this piece. it is Aztec, from the post-classic period 1325-1521 - probably from the Valley of Mexico. The symbols on the base "4 ollin, 5 movement", the 5 cardinal points in the nahua philosophy. i had been getting the stronger and stronger feeling that this was an authentic piece over the years and now i know.
