Simple Canvas Covered late 1890's - 1900's Slightly Curved Top Trunk. This lock is beautiful - how did they make that design? My question for the trunk community - would you remove canvas? I often have left original trunks in this condition just as is - dusted off a bit and love the look and history that it comes with. Curious to what others do with original condition trunks? What is pretty cool about his one, is that the bottom is canvas covered as well - handles are long gone but it does have original key. Found it in my friends barn - he has a lot of trunks in that barn and is slowly letting some of them go. That barn is my heaven.

You know, the canvass is gone on most of these old trunks. As good a condition as this seems to be, I vote to leave it on so people can see what they really looked like.

Canvas on or off is a personal choice as much as anything else. I know that a trunk is worth more when I sell them with the canvas off. Part of the problem is that drab brown color the canvas has. It is more popular to have the nice pine body exposed and my personal preference. However, that being said I have a nice wall trunk that has canvas in such excellent shape that I just cannot remove it even for aesthetics. The question then becomes -- what do you like and what kind of decor or context will this trunk be displayed?

I would be looking at it the same way. But I personally prefer original condition on most things.

Leave it alone! Its a beautiful trunk in great condition. Trunks are like cars, they were a utilitarian item. People did not buy them and put them in a corner like a bookcase. They were used, and like cars original "low mileage" ones are the most sought after. They may not, in some cases bring as much money (if you are selling them) as ones with finished wood, but to rip off a perfectly nice 100 plus year old covering is something we will all regret down the road.
The finish on the lock was done with a milling machine.

One more vote for original condition. Sometimes yes but in this case no.

Hi HMS Antique Trunks - kept is original and it went to a new home in NJ. To a musician who loves it - nice that it will be kept as is. Thanks for your comments.
