Bought this from the same man I bought the copper planter from. He did not have any details about it. I don't know its age and there are no markings on it.
FRONT.I used the wire wheel on a drill to get the rust off.I then primed and painted it the 3 colors: Silver on the center panels, the antique copper on the panels on each side of the center panels (all the way around the trunk: front, back, sides, bottom) and the aged Bronze on the lock, hinges, latches and metal straps.
The inside was a mess. All paper was removed, it was sanded then I added a coat of polyurathane to it.
The design in the silver areas is created by gluing paper doilies to the metal using wood glue, letting it dry, then painting it silver.
