This is a CDV sized tintype that dates from the 1880s. The soldier (probably a state troop) is holding an unusual weapon that I cannot ID. Can't seem to find my copy of Flayderman's right now!
Any help with an ID of the Rifle is appreciated!

Scott, without researching it & going by memory, ck. Merrill/Merill. I know the gun but not sure. One was on Robles site: Antiqueguns. Very recently.
I believe it's a Peabody Rifle

It is the Peabody. I checked on a site and found that both CT (2,000) and MA (2,941) these for their militias in the early 1870s. SC also purchased some but they were the carbine model.
The CT and MA models were the 1868 Spanish Model (.43). CT later had their models retrofitted and rechambered for the more common government 45-70.
