I know nothing about this chest, have had it couple months now which I got from a antique shop. At first when I seen it, I thought it was wood, I know its not rust but dont know if its paint either.
Forgot to mention I have a huge interest in antiques and wish to follow its path as my career. This is one of my first purchaces which I thought was a bargain, I hope i have made a good start.

Ravey I have seen these steel trunks before -- I believe they are made in England and very collectable there. They were made in the 1900's to 1930's. It was probably painted with a faux wood grain which is why you may have thought at first it was wood. Clean it up with a wet soapy cloth and see how clean it gets. If there is rust you may have to steel wool the rust off and repaint the trunk. Either way a fun trunk and a good start. BB2 has good advice -- collect for yourself and what you like -- there is the fun!

Thank you so much trunkman that is just what I wanted to know, great advice with the seel wall, as there is bits of rust in side on the bottom but nothing serious my only concern would be getting the corret paint?
And one more question if u dont mind, what would people of first stored in the chest. Once again thankyou trunkman.
Hi ravey -- this would have been used as a general storage box -- perhaps blankets or other household items. Matching the paint will be hard to do -- try to get a brown as close as possible if it is just a small area.
