This little lidded pewter box is rather frustrating as it has been impossible to find any background history on it. There is a very clear mark on it (the picture on the mark is not from this box, but the two marks are identical) - yet nothing turns up when one looks for 'Heuser' in old lists of manufacturers, shops etc. Based on the style it could have been made anytime between 1915 and the 1930's, but I will date it to around 1920 - the few other objects I've seen with the same mark are clearly from around 1920 stylistically. I really like this type of hammered pewter and there is actually a LOT of it available on flea markets etc., so I have a hard time trying to avoid stuffing my home with old cigar and jewelry boxes, beakers, trays etc. (especially as they are often very cheap)! Sometimes the little bud on the lid on these boxes is made of wood or amber.

Height: 8 cm; diameter 10 cm. Clearly marked with 'Heusers Hammer-Tin Copenhagen', along with three little mushroom-like shapes, perhaps stylized trees. I assume it is a jewelry box.

Could it be a sugar bowl?

Yes, I suppose that's a possibility too; haven't thought of that! - Thanks for the comments and the loves, all of you!

Actually, I now think it's a bonbonnière (candy dish) as it is similar in size and shape to a silver one I have also posted and which is definitely a candy dish!
