i don't know of year it was made, we have in our front yard and would like to possibly know what we can preserve it with so it doesn't rust worse than what it already has. and would like to know alittle about it. Thank you

horse drawn cultivator, these were made up to the 1940's and has tractors became popular, these faded away, unless you live in an Amish area, which I do lol, these are still in use. To preserve, get some spray can rust-o-lum paint (flat black) and spray away
perfect, Kerry10456. My ex-father in law gave this to me years ago, in Mississippi. and he said it was from 1920's or 1930's, and possibly before. he wasn't quite sure either, but gave to me because i was so interested in it, long before he passed
Also known as a Sulky cultivator & a side note this one is set up for row crop work.

Thanks y'all, I can't wait to begin preserving it. Shouldn't I get the biggest majority of rust off, before applying the rust-o-lum paint? Or what all should I do before?
if you wish to restore, could have professional sand-blasted, or if just to preserve, you can knock most of the rust loose with wire brush
thx, I'll have me and my husband knock off rust with wire brushes and/or he can possibly bring a sand blaster home from his shop, I've never thought of that, thanks alot. We live in the country, a good ways back (approx 35 mile from town for my husbands shop, but I think we have to head that way today). Our road is called "Island Road", because we're in the middle of several different waters. Its nice to live in this area, but gasoline for our vehicles gets expensive. haha.
Sounds like the perfect spot to live, I'm 7 miles to town and to close most of the time :-)
:) We love it here, not much traffic. Mostly tractors etc passing most times. A bit of vehicles going to and from homes past ours also. There's probably 10-15 homes alittle further in than ours. It's nice and we wouldn't change purchasing this home 6-7 yrs ago. We were just driving around the country roads also seeing alot of fields (cotton, corn, soy bean etc) and looking at all the waters and happened to see this home for sale by owner. It was wonderful.
You'll have to figure out who made it so that you can paint it the correct colour.
Are there any markings names or symbols on it?
walksoftly, I haven't seen anything on it, or can't remember seeing any markings on it. But we'll look in a bit, right before or after we have to run to town. I will let u know when we get back.
Purists would be very upset if you painted it green when it should be red or vice-versa :-)
yes, i'm sure they would :) we didn't go to town bc of the rain here, so i'll check for some markings as soon as the rain slows down. Where would I begin looking for symbols or markings?
You could look on the wheel hubs, frame, seat or just about anywhere.

The symbol at the top of picture 2 is the Internal Harvester Logo or the combined International Harvester Company & McCormick Deering logo

Walksoftly, thank u for giving me that information. All the sites were great. I'm not sure on the color tho. I may have overlooked it, since I just woke up and grabbed my phone to check for ur response. What color would u say for me to paint it ? just wire brush to get biggest amt of rust off then paint with rustoleum as Kerry10456 mentioned? Both of y'all r the best help ever. And I truly thank y'all for helping.
Red will be the primary colour, I couldn't find a decent picture of a painted cultivator last night. I'll see what I can find today.
I agree with Kerry just remove the heavy rust & paint with Rust-Oleum or equivalent.

set it up on some stone patio blocks ,or something like that,to keep the wheels out of the ground.Rolled many old pieces out just to find that spot in horrible condition!

Gargo is spot on with the advice on getting it up on patio block, it could be heavily rusted in those spots. He's also correct about me liking that red "stuff".

As far as I can tell McCormick-Deering used a red blue yellow combination & IH continued with that scheme for many years.
Yellow on the wheels, red on the frame & blue on the shank assemblies.

I agree with Walksoftly. Some of the plows also had cream colored, almost white wheels.
I would definitely sand blast the rust off. Painting over it can help trap moisture and make it worse. It would also be a good idea to bury some block or flat stone for the wheels to set on. A stake buried in the ground to tie it to would also be a good idea.

I could do a little at a time once I figure out with y'all's help, the color, I think they call it the color scheme. I have a spinal cord stimulator implanted in my back but I can do a little bit per day. It would be great if y'all could come help me and then I would know the color is right and everything is done right to specification detail ????. Thank y'all for all the help

I'm in the south west corner of Manitoba, apx. 2 hour drive north of Minot, ND.
Walksoftly, I think u r in Canada. Am I correct? From what I remember from traveling back to my home state (PA), Manitoba should only be approximately 20-23 hours from where I am now, in Louisiana. I figure that u can come my way once or twice, then next trip will be for me to travel ur way To Repair/paint this cultivator. That would be nice for us to get together just to make sure I am painting the correct color in the right areas of the cultivator. ????. Or maybe we can meet up half way. Haha. I'd have to get someone to put the cultivator on a trailer etc. Haha. It would be nice to make sure all paint colors r perfect. I will begin taking wire brush to rust areas. The sand blaster my husband has at work is extremely big and takes a large air compressor to work it. We have a little air compressor at home but our compressor wouldn't do the job & that sand blaster would be horrible to move.
Walksoftly, I enjoyed the Wisconsin history sites u sent and the color pictures. I believe the cultivator that I have is closer to the 4th site u sent. I love the colors. Now to find the exact yellow, red etc will be the problem for me ???? I wonder who re-painted the cultivator solid black, and why they did it. I'd rather have it colorful like it was originally meant to be.

Ok. Should I paint the wheels yellow or cream? Haha and the remainder of the cultivator body Red. As in today's colors, there r many different types of yellow, cream & red LOL. And for the arms stretching out front coming together. That I take it would be blk. But again charcoal, flat blk etc. Hahaa. I'm sorry to be such a troublesome person but now days there r a ton of colors for just one simple color hahaa. I apologize. I'm just getting carried away and laughing my tail off while I'm typing this. ???? atleast it's all in fun and a darn good time ????. lol Sure u can help me with the exact color scheme :) and I deleted that MSG u sent. Tractor supply,or Rural King carries IH RED ,IH CREAM,the blue...well a dark blue in my opinion.Good luck,keep us posted!

I'm sure going to get outside and begin as soon as it warms up a touch. Atleast so far it quit raining ???? but it snowed here alittle more today, so still cold. It's really unusual for it to snow in Louisiana. But just to let y'all know I had the cultivator moved alittle bit to get the wheels out of that low spot atleast until I can have Ronnie put it up on something for me to begin getting the rust off a little bit at a time.
Walks, would John Deere green work? My husband has some at work and can bring home tonight.
