This trophy was received by my husband's grandfather in a shooting competition in 1908.
It is made from silver and appears to be Chinese made when checking the hallmark, although I am not sure. It is a simple chalice shape but I love the quirky lizard like creature on the front. The reverse has a strange little bug, food for the lizard.
John Sutcliffe was a member of the Shanghai Municipal Police in the early 1900s. The SMP was a military type of force which was established in 1854 to control crime in British Shanghai. Although it was originally made up only of Britons, it later increased to include Chinese nationals and members from the Commonwealth. It was disbanded in 1943.
This trophy was given for 3rd place in Griffins, which I believe was a type of pistol.
My husband's grandfather had children late in life and we never knew him. A pity because by all family accounts he had a very interesting life!
