I'm new here but it seems to be a good site to learn about old trunks. I'm just getting into the trunk collection and restoring and am enjoying very much. I picked this one up in an antique store near Roanoke Va. Its wicker covered in canvas and leather, even has the original canvas cover bag. Measures 32" long, 22"w and 26" deep. Brass buttons wooden slats, brass lock (looking for a key). Very nice condition. Anyone have more info on this trunk. I believe it was made around 1900.

Hi, as you probably know, the Goyard trunks are quite collectible and increasing in value as more people learn more about them. Louis Vuitton and Goyard were big rivals in Paris and each made high quality trunks. I have found and early article that said the wicker trunks (also called basket trunks) were made for packing ladies gowns. I am not sure exactly why but there must have been a reason for that. Of course they were light weight and durable too. But many people don't know that these wicker or basket trunks were also made by quite a few American trunk makers from the 1880's to early 1900's. It's great that your trunk is so complete and original including the canvas cover. You should rub some mink oil or other leather preservative on the handles and other leather parts. This could be 1890's or later, but not certain on the dates for these with Goyard. Did you notice the label also shows an American eagle with stars and stripes shield? That's because Goyard, like L. Vuitton and others, had salesrooms in New York City and other big U.S. cities and wanted to be more accepted by Americans. It was common to have your initials painted on the sides along with your home town, as this one has. Also, most people don't know this (and sometimes don't believe it) but that lining in your trunk is flax linen, used in high quality trunks of Europe and American trunks. Some of the linen in trunks is even stamped Irish Linen or Holland Linen, which were considered the best. Hope this information helps some. Marvin, ThisOldTrunk.com

This is just a real treasure!! You don't find the wicker trunks in such nice condition as this one. And a Goyard at that!! Very lucky find. I've yet to find one I could afford, let alone in this condition. This one would carry a high price tag. Thanks for sharing!
