Maybe for making ruffles on sleeves or something like that but the gap is a bit wide.

Thank you blunderbuss2! That makes a lot of sense :)

Could it be a garlic press?
    4. MRSampson, 10 years ago
Hmmm...I don't know. It seems a little big to be a garlic press, but you never know, right? Thank you!

If I had a guess I would say it is a modern tobacco press for making your own cigarettes.
    6. MRSampson, 10 years ago
That's a good one! And it would be much cheaper to use than the make-them-yourself electric cigarette machines I see at the Tobacco Shop :)
      Thanks!

Juicer, like lemons maybe? It has that late 1800's look to it, except for the newer varnish.

      Garlic press?! Juicer?!

You guys are wonderful! I am not absolutely, positively sure what it is yet, but now I have some great possibilities to consider. Thank you all, very much :-)

I bought an identical tool in the antique market at Adamstown and the seller told me he has no idea what it is. We could not figure out what it was for. He told me he had it for more than two years and will sell it for nothing as I was genuinely interested in it. A year later, a seller of mechanical lemon squeezer (who specializes in lemon squeezers) had a similar one for sale and told me this is a very old bar lemon squeezer. He explained that the most lucrative ones of this kind were made by a company called “Will & Finck,” but many lower grade lemon squeezers were made using the same logic. The mechanism was simple: placing the half lemon between the sides, pressing the handle, and lemon juice streams down.

Wow! Thank you Cnaan! That was really interesting and I know my family will be thrilled to finally know what it was used for. My mom collected tools and had an extensive collection, but I have a feeling she never knew what it was used for either. Thank you again.
