Hey Beatle Jim, I have a question about this type of collectable? We see so many of these framed photographs with a card or paper with Signatures. Even if its John, Ringo etc. How does one tell if the item is a Vintage signature or something someone traced and autopen? I have seen a device were they use a neddle trace over an original signature and it make a copy on the other end with a pen. Sort of like making a new key using the original. I think any info to help those who would like to collect a Beatles signature item would be helpful. Thanks, Dave
Hey Dave...Because of their value, Beatles autographs are THE most forged signatures on the market..and have been for quite some time.I've purchased most of my items from Frank Caiazzo of The Beatles autographs and from Paul Wane of TRACKS.I've known both of these guys for years and they are the best in the hobby. I've read almost everything that Frank has published..how to spot fakes..what to look for....how their handwriting has changed over the years...fan club signatures...Neil Aspinall Beatles "signatures"...autopen signatures...etc.If you do study Beatles signatures it's gets easy over time to be able to spot a fake pretty quickly.
Thanks BeatleJim, that helps me and everyone else that reads this Post! Dave
Hey Dave....Speaking of Beatles autographs...there is a study going on trying to find out how many AUTHENTIC signed Beatle albums are known to exist.
So far....12 to 13 US signed Beatle albums have surfaced..and 112 to 119 UK Beatles albums have turned up. If you were LUCKY to have met ANY of the Beatles...never mind all 4...chances are you got an autograph on a check stub...a napkin...a newspaper you had with with you...etc. No one walked around with LP's waiting to be signed hoping to catch The Beatles and having it signed! Some dealers have "signed" Beatle albums for sale every week! You were able to get Beatles autographs when they became local stars in Liverpool in 1961 and then with Ringo in 1962...when they became national stars in Europe in 1963 they were still somewhat approachable...BUT...when they took over the world in 1964..they were basically sealed off from the outside world while on tour from 1964 thru 1966...you really couldn't get to them. Most autographs during this time were done by road manager Neil Aspinall....his Beatle signatures are easy to spot.
When you wrote to the fan club asking for autographs, you either received fan club penned signatures or a fan club card with autopen first name signatures only. These turn up on Ebay being touted as the real thing.
If you do any study concerning The Beatles handwriting after a while you can spot fakes...I mean John Lennon started using this type of "J" around March of 1963...before then he used the more tradtional letter "J"...in his autograph....A pristene signed "Meet The Beatles" from Jan 1964 can go as high as $120,000!!...for this kind of money...you can see why there are a ton of fakes out there.
Basically if you want to buy and invest in Beatles autographs and Beatles handwritten material...do your homework....buy from the best dealers...and you should be OK....
But remember.....if you're going to invest in Beatles autographs...you'll have to pay for them....there are no sets or signed albums for $100-$200!! The old adage is .."If the deal looks too good to be true....it probably is!!!"...
