CowBoy Boot ash tray that I also bought with the chandeliers. So far, I've took a wire brush and removed some of the rust off, I suppose we're going to paint it too. As soon as we get all the paint for the cultivator :)

There was originally a brown glass ash tray that set in the top opening for cigarettes or cigars. Using a wire brush and/or painting it will reduce any value there is (which isn't much anyway).
Personally I wouldn't paint it, I would try and find an ashtray.
Thanks for the love Geo, truckman, Vansky, Manikan, Agh, Pops, Fhr & Nutsabot :) I'm going to try and get some fine grit sand paper today to finish sanding rust off. I just used the wire brush on the great big rust spots :) and thx Fhr and Pops for the comments. I believe the boot and handle above the ash try is brass. I wonder about the rest. It has a brass color but rusts. What do y'all think?
I don't recall the one my dad owned ever rusting but it was made of different types of metal I think. I got many of his ash trays but not that one.
I think if I were going to clean it I would use a fine grit steel wool or a soft brass brush. I have also had good luck using nitro solvent, the stuff you would clean guns with. If you have a dremel tool with different size buffing pads you can probably buff it up. Maybe even use a little brasso.
Thank you Fhr, yes, I have gun cleaning solvent and a dremel tool, I've never thought of that to clean it up :) Thanks so much, I'll post a pic after I finish it.. I have no idea when that'll be, probably over the weekend :)
Another thing I found that works well is a cheap battery operated tooth brush. I like the ones that spin around because they kick out the junk stuff. They work well for the hard to reach areas. Mothers Mag Wheel polish and paste automotive rubbing compound also work. I usually try it in a hidden spot like under the top to test it and see what I will get. If your dremel isn't variable speed don't use too much pressure. The faster it spins the more heat it will build up, slower is better. Over the years I have tried lots of different compounds and tools and every item is different. What works for one is useless on another.
That sounds like a good idea. I cleaned the chandeliers yesterday with the solvent, I had the ashtray right beside me too, but after I finished with the chandeliers my behind was hurting from sitting on the wood floor hahaha. But the chandeliers look nice. They need cleaned more with something else, bc i didn't use the dremel tool on them just fine grit sand paper and solvent. I had to take the hanging crystals or glass things off first. But they do look much better. Soon as we go to town today (35-40 miles one way) in a few hours to bury my sister in laws horse with our backhoe to dig the big spot to bury, and then get back home, I'm going to begin working on the ash tray. Hopefully Ronnie will set me up a chair and a table heavy enough to hold the ash tray in the livingroom so I don't have to sit on the floor again haha. :) I couldn't move the stuff around to get the heavy table in there haaha But I'm sure I'll need ur assistance some more this afternoon with what else I could use on what parts haha. i have an ashtray 100% like yours, however, i fell down on top of it 2 days ago breaking the handle. In doing so i found that the nut was threaded to a flat head countersunk screw which was molded into the handle. The screw might date back to the 40's. our ashtray was given to my dad from his great aunt back in the 60"s. when she passed on. If you come across another handle please let me know. I did find another ashtray just like ours except the handle was missing and they wanted $44.00 on e-bey
Bch4205, my apologies for not responding sooner, but I was in a car accident 3 years ago and it paralyzed me waist down. I'm on so many meds for my back pain and nerve pain and jolts from my waist down, under and all around my knees, to my toes. Usually When I start reading, I doze off. I thank you so much for commenting. And enquiring on purchasing some of my items. I'm sure I'll be selling some things, but it's gonna take some time for my husband to clean out our other home, where all of my Antiques are.
