In 1948 the Gene Autry wrist watches were introduced but Wilane Watch Co. There were two variants of those, a round version and a Tonneau style with Gene and his horse. There are difference in production graphics of these rounded variants, one "fat" and one "thin" faced Gene. Then there's a animated one produced also. Thethree companies that produced these same graphic round cased pieces were Wilane, Lancaster and New Haven(Muros). I have shown all three side by side and the Tonneau cased variants. The Wilane variants are 1948, the Lancaster is also 48 and the New Haven is 1951.
Thanks for looking and hope you enjoyed seeing the different variants of the early Gene Autry watches.

There is a lot about these Autry watches that I find confusing/odd. I haven't really researched these that much though.

Regardless, great set and thanks for posting!

And I mean the Autry watches in general, not just your examples.

Thank again Adam, I will locate the advert and add, when I find it again, lol. In earlier postings of these(before delete) I had the ad posted also. Hard to keep track of everything :-)

    Kerry,

Thanks, I would appreciate it. Do you know anything about the Wilane Watch Co.?
  8. kerry10456 kerry10456, 10 months ago
Tried to research, but to not much head way. I believe Wilane and Lancaster were "sister" companies, but haven't put a reference to them as Mother company.

Strange. I wonder if maybe they were bought out by New haven. That could explain why they would have been allowed to use the same design.

I also can't figure out why they made so many different boxes. There are at least 6 different variants that I know of. Two of them are completely different and both for watches made in 1948. Seems like a lot of money to spend to come up with different boxes. Why not just sell the Tonneau watch in the same box as the round?

Actually, 4 of the box variants are dated 1948.

The tonneau boxing was total different as you said, it would seem smarter to run same packaging. And the story I always heard on the rounds.... that Gene didn't like the first run "Chubby Cheek" variant and had them redo it, making the Lancaster the earliest run of all. The New Haven ownership would explain, might be "Mother" company or possible Muros owned the original graphics and produced for all three as private labels

That makes sense that Gene wouldn't like it, or at least is agent....lol

There are also boxes of both the Skinny and Chubby Autry that have a more photo-realistic look rather than the caricature drawn box top.

There was apparently a lot of confusion in the factory.
