This was my bit of weekly excitement! I was in my local Vinnies and saw a woman pick up this large plate. I immediately recognised the signature on it but more than that fell in love with it! I had to quickly stand very close to her (nonchalantly of course) so that I could grab it as soon as she put it down. It was always going to be mine......$8 I was happy as.
This charger is from Wangrove Potteries NSW which is the last studio that the great potter Rudolf Dybka worked from. An immigrant to Australia in 1968 Dybka established himself as one of our premier ceramicists (even though he probably struggled to make a living).
This plate is typical of his work - effortlessly made in a simple design, beautifully finished and with quirky artwork. I believe Dybka still lives near Murrumbateman but I know that Wangrove is no longer a productive company. He may still be potting (I'm sure Vetraio will know).
Plate is 330mm wide of white clay, glazed to front and lip. Base is unglazed.
