I bought this piece about 15 years ago. I just liked it because it was so unusual. It is 2"x2" It is set in Sterling, but don't know what it was carved from, doesn't have the pattern of ivory. I haven't been able to find out much information on what the wording on the back is except that it is not Japanese, probably Chinese. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, all in fun, I would make two bets: first, that it's ivory, I can see Schreger lines on both sides; secondly, that it's Japanese. It looks like depictions I've seen of Ebisu, one of the Japanese Seven Lucky Gods, the god of fishermen. Hope someone can read the kanji. It's large enough to be netsuke and has the required himotosi (holes) on the back. I think you may have an exceptional piece. Regards, Jim

Hi, Go here and look at the fourth figure down on the right, wood statue.

After looking at pictures of Ivory, I think it could be - I am used to seeing the more cross hatched look of Ivory. I appreciate your comments on what I may have. I have looked for years trying to find something like it, and have had no luck.

A couple of additional points: the two kanji are probably a signature, as netsuke is usually signed; it was probably mounted long after it was carved.

That is what I have to figure out - is how to sell it. I think since it is pre-ban, that it can be sold within the U.S.? I need to pull out all records I have of my purchase, but I don't have a lot to go on.
