A two mile walk from Bolton Abbey is this waterfall in the Valley of Desolation. The woodland is located on the Bolton Abbey Estate in the upper reaches of Posforth Gill, a tributary of the River Wharfe. The valley owes its name to the desolation caused by the great storm in 1826. Nature has long since repaired the devastation and now it covered with trees of every colour possible green, orange, brown, red, purple and yellow - a brilliant spectacle. Eventually the path crosses a beck which is fed by a very impressive waterfall that drops about 20 foot into a pool below. The fine spray of the waterfall is captured well in this image.
These days it is known as Posforth Gill Waterfall.

This is a card collected by the Millers in 1906. It is part of the Valentines Series published by Valentines of Dundee, Scotland. This one is card No. 3634. They were a major publisher of 'views' founded in Dundee in 1825 as a lithographic printing firm. James Valentine, son of the founder, was one of the early pioneers of photography. His prints are used in early prints and stereo-views. They produced Xmas cards in 1880 and their postcards were first created in 1896. The firm was finally bought out by John Waddington & Co. in 1963.
I love the way places have been named - "The Valley of Desolation".
Somehow I think this image is enhanced by being black and white.
