Once upon a time I bought an orange bowl having fallen under the spell of its dinky cobalt feet. Then one day Czechman appeared from the Glass Forest to show everyone an identical bowl, but in red and black. His bowl however had the magic oval mark reading, Made in Czechoslovakia. And so it was my orphan bowl became a prince of the House of Loetz.
Yesterday fate struck a blow of a different stripe. Welzebub, another Glass Wizard, arrived in the global village known as C.W. with an announcement. It seems my 'pink candy striped vase' (seller's description) has been transformed into a frog and cast into the dungeon of Unknown Maker. This being the punishment for travelling the world without identification!
Perhaps Kipling was thinking of glass collectors when he wrote,
If you can meet with triumph and disaster,
And treat those two imposters just the same.....................
