I am taking a break from my own collection this week to post something different.
This is a limited edition Model 73 Winchester (reproduced by Uberti) in .44.-40, paying tribute to the western frontier. The receiver etched with vignettes including a cattle drive, railroad, bronco buster, cavalryman, frontier town, covered wagon and stagecoach. The finish is silver nitrate with 24 karat gold accents, with other parts plated in 24 karat gold. It has an octagonal barrel and checkered walnut stock. The rifle is unfired and has its original shipping case and paperwork. It was created by a company called America Remembers.
This rifle belonged to my uncle who left it in my care when he moved to Mexico where the gun laws are prohibitive. He passed away last month and I am grieving his loss. This last weekend his son came to pick his father’s guns up. I decided to photograph them as I got them ready to go.
It’s not really my kind of collectable. I like well-handled items that were made to be used – but this is a valid area of firearm collecting and I think well worth posting.
Nice. I've owned a number of original 73's in the past & it's hard to believe the prices they bring today.
If I hadn't gotten into military collectables, I'd have probably wondered into the cowboy collectable arena. Unfortunately there's only so much time to learn and money to spend.
