The 8-cent George Gershwin commemorative stamp was first placed on sale at Beverly Hills, California, on February 28, 1973. This stamp was the first of four in the American Arts Series issued in 1973. Composer George Gershwin (1898-1937) was extremely popular during the 1920s and 1930s. He was noted for his work's experimental nature and was at the peak of his career when he passed away in 1937 because of a brain tumor. The stamp was designed by Mark English and was issued in sheets of forty, with an initial printing of fifty million.
