I bought this nifty cabinet in Belgium. I felt like it must be Victorian Era however right in the front and center is in laid wood with "1740"..I wonder if that's the date? Why else would someone inlay those numbers front and center on this lovely cabinet? In any event, it has it's original working locks and keys and i love this gem...the scenes on the front appear to have Viking looking men and monks...hmm! Any ideas??

i will take some...that whole room is rather dark, i have a bunch of very dark antiques in that room and it makes the whole room look dark. I will try to get some better ones. :)

Know what you mean. Most of my furniture is dark red woods & dark furniture and it makes a room look smaller. Amber made me note that you are a FNG so welcome to our cyber-asylum.

To make folks think it was actually old!

This form is popular among those who create antique reproductions. Details of the interior/ joints/ hinges/ back will reveal if it has actual age or not. Add some more photos when you are able.

Especially of screw-heads, joint construction etc.. Didn't know we were going to be this "picky", did you? We aren't there, so have to go by pics.

the drawers are all dove tail, nice...and the locks are original old locks.
    16. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 10 years ago
Actually, I would think dutch or Belgie before even considering Italian.
    17. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
i would guess english, dutch or german by the look of the knights on the corners. there were a lot of repros made even way back in victorian times, so to get a better feel for the piece, better pics w/ a quality camera and good lighting would be a good start.
    18. Ravenred Ravenred, 10 years ago
Yes thank you..i know...better pics required.

there were a lot of ones w/ a similar look made in the 1920s - gothic revival, maybe? but the date on yours may be significant, if the construction is right. there should be some old repairs or some wear and tear visible as well.

Thanks Ho2cultcha...I posted a couple of pics, can only add 4 at a time and the inside of this cabinet is filled to the brim with stuff so i can't get inside nor the backside pics without completely emptying it! which i have no time to do...it's not THAT important to me. I know it's old, it has a TON of repairs and if it's 1800's instead of 1700's, it really matters not! It's a wonderful old piece loaded with character and i love it! :) English is a thought, i agree with that...i could be. :)

Very old dovetails but that doesn't really date it accurately. Beautiful piece & see why you are so proud of it.
    22. Ravenred Ravenred, 10 years ago
thanks blunder! i do love it. :) thanks for all your input! :)

The dovetails would make me think LATE 1800s at the earliest. Carving blow ups also appear to be of the same era. MY OPINION.

fhrjr2 is the "dovetail expert" on the forum and can probably supply more detailed information.

thank you Scott, have no desire to chat with him anymore...he's rude in my opinion.. I agree with your assessment Scott, i thought 1800's too...it really doesn't matter. Thanks much!
