Bristol - the city where my great grandfather Oliver Gummer (b. 1864, d. 24 May 1925). He was born in a southern area of Bristol called Bedminster.

This card is a good introduction to the city of Bristol. The city is one of the big ten British cities. A long history linked to the sea in South West England. It lies on the river Avon.

“As a major seaport, Bristol has a long history of trading commodities, originally wool cloth exports and imports of fish, wine, grain and dairy produce, later tobacco, tropical fruits and plantation goods; major imports now are motor vehicles, grain, timber, fresh produce and petroleum products.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol

Bristol was deeply involved in the triangulation of the slave trade!

Why the Millers went to Bristol is not entirely clear in my mind. Maybe it was for the horse racing? In 1906 there was a race course near Chepstow south of Bristol. Septimus was a major player in horse racing in Australia, Many of the sites visited on this tour are near major racing centres.

But perhaps it was for the architecture too!

There are 100 Grade I listed buildings in Bristol, England: buildings officially designated as being of special architectural, historical or cultural significance.

The second oldest listed building in Bristol is Bristol Cathedral aka The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity.

Founded in 1140 by Robert Fitzharding, a wealthy local landowner and royal official, it was an Augustinian monastery. The style of the original building is Norman or Romanesque. The gatehouse to the monastery we see on the right in the card. The basic structure dates to around 1170 although the tower and gatehouse were added by abbot John Newland around 1500.

The card is local to Bristol too. It was published by Harvey Barton & Son (1885-1960) St. Michael’s Hill, Bristol, England.
