This half bust is from the Igorot people from the highlands of Northern Luzon in the Philippines. The Igorot are comprised of about 10 ethnic groups but I am not sure which this belongs too.
The quality of the carving makes this probably from the 1930s to the 1950s when these half busts were made for the first groups of tourists and then post war. There is great detail in the warrior's hair and hair basket, earrings have been made in situ, and the features and bodyform are beautifully modeled. The traditional pipe, hair band and wooden and bone necklace are featured well.
The Igorot were the last of the headhunters in the Philippines and were once a warlike people. Pacified by the Spanish and Americans, they remain peaceful but still retain many cultural elements, such as their belief is ancestral spirits and the ritualistic use of animal sacrifice and song and dance to propitiate them.
Made from a hardwood, nicely polished, this bust is a real work of craftsmanship.
